Role Models from the Bible

Looking up to someone who inspires you makes navigating through life easier, especially for children. They’re learning about themselves and the world around them while surrounded by all kinds of influences. Fortunately, they need to look no further than the Bible for inspiration. Bible stories are full of men and women who did incredible things in the name of God. Here are a few of those powerful figures who could be great role models:

Noah

The story of Noah and his ark is one of the most popular ones in the Bible. God chooses Noah to carry on the human race after He unleashes a great flood. In return, He says He will save Noah and his family. Noah even tries to negotiate with God, begging him to spare more people if they’re righteous. Following God’s instructions, Noah builds an ark and takes in male and female specimens of every animal in the world. In the end, because he has faith, Noah, his family and the animals survive, and everything begins anew.

Ruth

In Ruth’s story, she overcomes adversity by sticking by her family in their time of need. After the death of her husband, father-in-law and brother-in-law, she stays by her mother-in-law Naomi’s side as they journey to Naomi’s homeland. The two stay true to each other throughout the journey, where Ruth meets her future husband, a relative of Naomi. Boaz and Ruth fall in love and marry after he hears about her devotion to her grieving mother-in-law.

Peter

Considered by Catholics to be the first pope, Peter is known for being the spokesman for the Twelve Apostles. He is also known for denying Jesus three times during the trial that led to the crucifixion. However, despite that, he still lived up to the name Jesus bestowed on him — the Rock on which the Church was built. Before meeting Jesus, Peter was a fisherman, but he abandoned that life to follow Him. After Jesus died and was resurrected, Peter went on to preach the word of God, often speaking to crowds of thousands at a time.

Mary, Mother of Jesus

In the Catholic faith, Mary is one of the most venerated figures from the Bible. When the angel Gabriel first greeted her, she was afraid. However, she was willing to receive the news that she would be giving birth to the Son of God. She gave birth to Jesus in a stable and protected him during his youth with her husband Joseph by her side, fleeing to Egypt so that Jesus would be protected. Throughout her life, she saw herself as a servant of God, and she raised Jesus’s younger brothers and sisters with the same servant spirit.

Moses

From humble beginnings as a child who was hidden to avoid being killed and then found by the daughter of an Egyptian pharaoh, Moses is one of the most influential figures in the Bible. He was raised as royalty and reunited with his mother, who happened to be hired to nurse him. After killing an Egyptian who was beating a Jewish worker, Moses fled Egypt and his life in the palace — never wanting to return. God had other plans, calling Moses back to Egypt so that Moses and his brother Aaron would lead the Jews out of slavery. God later called upon Moses to present the ten commandments to His followers and establish the new covenant between God and the Israelites. Moses proves no one is too old to be in ministry; when he rescued his people, he was 80 years old.
